Featured Fossil – Kronosaurus queenslandicus

Kronosaurus tooth from Richmond, QLD. 09/09/2010.

Kronosaurus tooth from Richmond, QLD. 09/09/2010.

Pictured is a tooth I found while fossicking around the limestone road base quarry site in Richmond, Queensland in 2010.

Kronosaurus queenslandicus is an extinct short-necked pliosaur, a marine reptile around 10 metres in length and around 11 tonnes in weight, that roamed the shallow inland Eromanga sea in Australia around 100 million years ago.

Drive out to Richmond, have a dig around the fossil hunting sites  for pliosaurs, ichthyosaurs, 3m long fish, 50 cm long bivalve clams and more strange sea creatures from a time long ago. And don’t forget to visit the Kronosaurus Korner museum – there is a huge model of the Kronosaurus outside, and lots of Kronosaurus fossils inside. All while travelling the Australia’s Dinosaur Trail around the Winton, Richmond and Hughenden triangle.

  • I just came across a post [reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency] about Solarcoin. Solarcoin was announced [bitcointalk.org] on 16/09/2014. It’s an alternative digital currency where the value is related to the generation of 1 megawatt hours (MWh) of solar electricity, no matter where in the world it is produced. Here is the white paper. ElectriCChain [electricchain.org] plans to build a public tool to monitor solar energy globally in near real-time on the Solarcoin blockchain. Any verified solar electricity producer is entitled to receive Solarcoins for free. Here is the Coin Market Cap chart [coinmarketcap.com].

Decred

  • I have just pointed 2 of my R9 390X GPUs to mining the new Decred cryptocurrency. Decred just launched yesterday and the network hashrate is already 3,115 GHashes/second. Each of my R9 390X GPUs have a hashrate of 1.928 GH/s. Total 3.856 GH/s. Proportion of the network = 0.12% . I’ll only be mining decreds part time to find out whether it is some worth bothering with. Decred uses a hybrid proof-of-work / proof-of-stake mining algorithm and the Blake-256 proof-of-work hashing algorithm is designed for GPU mining, not the ASIC mining that dominates Bitcoin. Bitcoin ASIC mining has resulted in a high centralisation of the mining power in China with cheap electricity and a lot of wasted electricity. Decred also has a mining reward scheme where a proportion of the mining rewards is allocated to the developers of the software – this proportion is reasonable when the price of decreds is low, but will be too high if the price of decreds rises significantly. The other attractive attribute of Decred is the governance model which is meant to be more democratic. Bitcoin is currently going through a block-size crisis due to the un-democratic governance in the Bitcoin ecosystem, with censorship in forums and DDoS attacks on organisations with alternative views on the block-size debate.

My Ethereum Playground

  • King of the Ether Throne [kingoftheether.com] continued. I thought I would elect my friend Major Tom to be the King of the Ether throne and prepared the transaction command in the geth (Ethereum software) console, but the cost of 42.7 ethers (AUD 156.32) is beyond my budget. I later came back to the geth console and accidentally pressed <Enter> instead of <Control>-C and sent the 42.7 ETH to elect Major Tom as King of the Ether Throne, and thought “Shit, a lesson learned – it is too easy to lose cryptocurrencies.”
Just my luck on this Chinese New Year of the Monkey that a greater monkey king Vitty usurped Major Tom and the smart contract sent me 99% of their 63.36 ETH (~ AUD 233) payment, as programmed in the KingOfTheEtherThrone.sol smart contract.
I made 19.19828 ETH (~ AUD 70.84) out of my fat-finger exercise. So long Major Tom, and thanks for the fish AUD 70. A nice parting gift.

Ethereum

  • The Ethereum World Computer page is being updated. It will take a few weeks to complete, but have a look – some resources already there.
  • King of the Ether Throne [kingoftheether.com] – another example of a decentralised app to waste your ethers on. Check out the smart contract source code at KingOfTheEtherThrone.sol [github.com].
There may be a bug (No – later corrected itself) as I sent in my first transaction at the same time as someone else sent their transaction – my transaction is meant to be refunded, but this refund may appear in a later block.
So I sent another transaction and now Bokky Poo Bah is the 9th King of the Ether Throne, the First of Their Name, the Uncentralized, the Sovereign of the Exalted Order of Miners, the Emperor of the Blocks beyond the Sidechains, the Head of the Great Patricia Tree. The fear of being usurped is maddening…

Update: 10:04 07/02/2016 – I have been usurped and most of my original payment has ended back in my account as programmed in the smart contract. This exercise cost me 0.63109 ETH which is 2.60 AUD @ 3.58 AUD/ETH and this is mainly the transaction fees.
One thing about smart contracts is that payments from smart contracts do not show up as regular payments on some block explorers as they are internal transactions.
Smart contracts are nice – thanks Vitalik and co.
